An adsorbent produced from a plant-origin material having a silicon content of 5 wt% or more which comprises a porous carbon material having a specific surface area determined by the nitrogen BET method of 10 m 2 /g or more, a silicon (Si) content of 1 wt% or less and a pore volume determined by the BJH method and the MP method of 0.1 cm 3 /g or more. This adsorbent adsorbs indole, uric acid, adenosine, α-amylase, 3-methylindole, tryptophan, indican, theophylline, inosine-5-monophosphate disodium salt, adenosine-5-triphosphate disodium salt, a fatty acid, a colorant, a hydrophobic molecule or an organic material having a number-average molecular weight of 1×10 2 or more and less than 5×10 2 (for example, an organic molecule or a protein). |
