abstract The invention provides a method for the preparation of a biocompatible hydrogel by prepolymerizing a one or more monomers in an aqueous reaction medium into a water- soluble, unsaturated resin, removing at least part of the aqueous reaction medium and/or treating the resin with steam, followed by photopolymerizing the resin into a hydrogel in the presence of a photoinitiator. Moreover, the invention provides the hydrogel prepared by this method, the use thereof, as well as eye implants made therefrom and/or medical implants composed of or coated with this hydrogel.
