abstract Provided are a milk protein degradation product that has excellent mass producibility and requires no protein source other than a milk-derived starting material that is the main culture starting material for bifidobacterium and can promote growth of bifidobacterium, a method for manufacturing said milk protein degradation product, and a bifidobacterial growth-promoting agent that has said milk protein degradation product as the active ingredient. Disclosed are a milk protein degradation product that is obtained by hydrolyzing milk protein using 1 or more selected from a group consisting of live lactobacillus cells comprising cell wall-localized protease (cell wall-enveloped proteinase, PrtP), disrupted cells of the above lactobacillus, and a fraction of the above enzyme fractionated from the above lactobacillus, a method for manufacturing said milk protein degradation product and a bifidobacterial growth-promoting agent having said milk protein degradation product as the active ingredient.
