The invention relates to use of spiropyran compounds of the formula (I) for photo induced reversible fluorescence modulation, formula (I) wherein X is a fluorophore residue; R 1 is hydrogen, -C 1 -C 6 alkoxy, halogen, -C 1 -C 6 alkyl or -NO 2 ; R 2 is hydrogen or -C 1 -C 6 alkoxy; R 5 is hydrogen, halogen, -C 1 -C 6 alkoxy, -COOH, -COO-C 1 -C 6 alkyl, -CF 3 or phenyl; R 4 hydrogen or R 4 and R 5 form together a phenyl ring; R 3 is -C 1 -C 6 alkyl, phenyl, naphthyl, anthracen-9-yl, 9H-fluoren-9-yl or a residue (formula IA) wherein R 6 is hydrogen, halogen, -C 1 -C 6 alkoxy, -NO 2 , -CF 3 , - O-CF 3 , -CN, -COO-C 1 -C 6 alkyl, phenyl or biphenyl, 9H-fluoren-9-yl; R 7 is hydrogen, halogen, -CN, -C 1 -C 6 alkoxy or R 7 and R 6 form together a phenyl ring; R 8 is hydrogen, halogen, -CN, or -C 1 -C 6 alkoxy; R 9 is hydrogen, halogen or CN; R 10 is hydrogen, halogen or CN; R a is -(CH 2 )n- with n = 1-6 or -CH 2 -CH=CH-. The invention further relates to new spiropyrans having a fluorophore group selected from (formula IB). |
