abstract Disclosed is a method for producing a pyrimidine compound, which is useful as an intermediate for agrochemicals or pharmaceuticals, by simple operations with high yield. The method produces only a small amount of by-products. Specifically disclosed is a method for producing a compound represented by formula (III), a compound represented by formula (IV) or a mixture of the compounds by reacting a compound represented by formula (I) and a compound represented by formula (II) in the presence of a pyridine. (In the formulae, R 1 and R 2 each represents a methyl group, a methoxy group or an ethoxy group; and X 1 and X 2 each represents Cl or -OCCl 3 .)
