A trifunctional (meth)acrylate compound represented by the following general formula (I); and a polymerizable composition containing the compound. The compound preferably is a compound in which ring A 1 , ring A 2 , and ring A 3 in general formula (I) each is a benzene ring or naphthalene ring and at least one of the ring A 1 , ring A 2 , and ring A 3 is a naphthalene ring, or is a compound in which X 1 , X 2 , and X 3 each is -COO- or -OCO-. More preferred is a compound in which ring A 3 is a naphthalene ring. Even more preferred is the compound which by itself can retain a liquid-crystal phase at 30°C and lower temperatures. (In the formula, M 1 , M 2 , and M 3 each represents methyl, etc.; rings A 1 , A 2 , and A 3 each represents a benzene ring, naphthalene ring, etc.; Z 1 , Z 2 , and Z 3 each represents C 1-6 alkyl, etc.; X 1 , X 2 , and X 3 each represents -COO-, -OCO-, etc.; Y 1 and Y 2 each represents -L 1 -, and Y 3 represents -L 2 -, etc. (L 1 and L 2 each represents C 1-8 alkylene); a, b, and c indicate the number of substituents of the ring A 1 , ring A 2 , and ring A 3 , respectively, and when the number of six-membered rings contained in each substituted monocycle or fused ring is expressed by u, then the a, b, and c each independently is an integer of 2u+2 or smaller, provided that at least one of the a, b, and c is an integer of 1 or larger; p's each independently is an integer of 1-8; q and r each independently is an integer of 1-3; and s and t each independently is 0 or 1, provided that s+t≥1.) |
