A honeycomb structure having a columnar honeycomb unit having a longitudinally provided cell wall partitioning multiple cells extending from a first end face to a second end face, characterized in that the cell wall contains a NOx adsorbent material (for example, ceria) and an inorganic binder, and that the cell wall carries an ammonia adsorbent material (for example, zeolite), the ammonia adsorbent material carried in amounts differing between the first end face and the second end face. Further, there is disclosed an exhaust gas treating apparatus characterized by having the above honeycomb structure provided so that the amount ofammonia adsorbent material carried by the first end face is less than that carried by the second end face, and so that the honeycomb structure is disposed in the exhaust gas treating apparatus in such a fashion that the first end face comes on an upstream side of exhaust gas. |
