An antibacterial material comprising at least one kind of microparticles selected from among tungsten oxide microparticles and tungsten oxide complex microparticles. In a test which comprises coating test pieces with the microparticles at a ratio of 0.02 mg/cm 2 or more but not more than 40 mg/cm 2 , inoculating the test pieces with at least one kind of bacterium selected from among Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli , and evaluating the viable cell count after storing for 24 hours, the microparticles show an antibacterial activity R of 0.1 or more[R=log(B 1 /C 1 )]; wherein (B 1 stands for the average viable cell count of untreated test pieces after storing for 24 hours, and C 1 stands for the average viable cell count of the microparticle-coated test pieces after storing for 24 hours). |
