abstract Provided is a method of manufacturing, on a substrate provided with straight-line atomic steps that are parallel to each other on the surface thereof, a microstructure which consists of linear elements running along the atomic steps. The above method comprises a stage of preparing a substrate provided with atomic steps on the surface thereof and a stage of providing linear elements on the substrate. The preceding linear elements are aligned so as to run along the preceding atomic steps. As a result, a microstructure consisting of linear elements running along the atomic steps is formed on the substrate. The substrate as described above can be prepared by super-smoothening a silicon carbide substrate, a sapphire substrate or a zinc oxide substrate. As the linear elements as described above, peptide fibers which consist of peptide molecules forming a ß-sheet structure can be used.
