abstract The present invention relates to antimicrobial compositions including an aromatic dialdehyde and a quaternary ammonium compound wherein the aromatic dialdehyde is orthophthalaldehyde, isophthalaldehyde, terephthalaldehyde, or combinations thereof, wherein the weight ratio of aromatic dialdehyde to quaternary ammonium compound is from 10:1 to 1:5. The invention also relates to methods of treating surfaces, in particular for disinfection or sterilization, using the antimicrobial compositions of the invention.
