abstract |
The present invention relates to a process for the production of salts of fatty acid alkyl ester sulfonates comprising the steps of: (a) sulfonating a fatty acid methyl ester with gaseous sulfur thoxide in a continuous process thereby generating a crude sulfonation product comprising more than 15 % by weight of residual fatty acid methyl ester; (b) dissolving an amount of less than 10% by weight of inorganic sulfates, calculated on the weight of the crude sulfonation product, into the crude sulfonation product resulting from step a); (c) ageing the solution resulting from step b); (d) re-esterifying the aged product resulting from step c) by the addition of methanol; (e) neutralising the re-esterified product resulting from step d); and (f) bleaching the neutralised product resulting from step e). |
