abstract Disclosed is a pigment composition having excellent dispersibility, which enables to obtain a coating film with high contrast when used for a color filter. Also disclosed is a coloring composition. Specifically disclosed is a pigment composition which is prepared as follows: C. I. pigment red 177 and a pigment derivative having a basic or neutral substituent in a dye of a specific structure are dissolved in sulfuric acid and then mixed with water for precipitation, and after that an acidic component is removed from the precipitate. Also specifically disclosed is a coloring composition for color filters, which is obtained by dispersing the pigment composition in a pigment carrier composed of a transparent resin, a precursor thereof or a mixture of them.
