An organic electroluminescent device which comprises a cathode, an anode, and an organic thin film layer disposed between the electrodes and composed of one or more layers, wherein the organic thin film layer includes at least one luminescent layer and at least one of the luminescent layer(s) comprises at least one phosphorescent material and a host material represented by the following formula (1). Ra-Ar1-Ar2-Rb (1) (In the formula, Ra and Rb each represents an (un)substituted benzene ring or a fused aromatic hydrocarbon ring selected among a naphthalene ring, chrysene ring, fluoranthene ring, triphenylene ring, phenanthrene ring, benzophenanthrene ring, dibenzophenanthrene ring, benzotriphenylene ring, benzochrysene ring, and picene ring each optionally substituted; and Ar1 and Ar2 each represents an (un)substituted benzene ring or a fused aromatic hydrocarbon ring selected among a naphthalene ring, chrysene ring, fluoranthene ring, triphenylene ring, benzophenanthrene ring, dibenzophenanthrene ring, benzotriphenylene ring, benzochrysene ring, and picene ring each optionally substituted.) |
