abstract The invention relates to a method for producing acetic and formic acid by the gas phase oxidation of ethanol or mixtures containing ethanol in the presence of oxygen on a catalyst containing a.) a component I consisting of one or more oxides from the group comprising titanium dioxide, zirconium dioxide, tin dioxide, aluminium oxide and b.) a component II containing between 0.1 and 1.5 % by weight, in relation to the weight of component I and per m2/g specific surface of component I, of vanadium pentoxide. According to the invention, said method is carried out in a recycling procedure and the resultant crude acid is separated from the cycle by water absorption. This aqueous phase is subsequently separated into pure acetic and formic acid by means of one extraction step and several distillation steps.
