abstract Methodology is described for the creation of sensors and microcircuitry of structures in the form of sheets, films or wires, comprising sensor element, for the direct detection of ligand- antiligand binding interactions. Nanostructures comprise non-conductive substrate-bound conductive nanoparticles, with an ordered array of the nanoparticles at a density below the threshold where the nanostructure becomes conductive. Antiligands are attached to the nanoparticles of the substrate, and corresponding set of cognate ligands are attached to a further set of detection nanoparticles, respectively. The detection nanoparticles are also conductive. The binding reaction is determined from the transition in the electrical properties of the structures, mediated by the binding of the conductive detection nanoparticles. Ligand-antiligand pairs may be antibody-antigen pairs or corresponding sets of complementary nucleic acids or oligonucleotides. Useful structure may be further created by means of sandwich formats involving additional pairs of binding interactions.
