abstract The object is to produce an aqueous dispersion of a resin microparticle having a desired particle size range and a narrow particle size distribution, by using a resin having a relatively high softening temperature (Tm) without the need of using any organic solvent for dispersing the resin in an emulsion dispersion method. Specifically disclosed is a method for producing an aqueous dispersion of a resin microparticle, which comprises the following steps: a mixing step for mixing an aqueous medium, a resin having an acidic group, a basic substance and a surfactant to produce a mixture; a dispersing step for applying a shearing force to the mixture while heating the mixture to a temperature higher by 10.0°C or more than a softening point (Tm) of the resin having an acidic group to produce a dispersion; and cooling step for cooling the dispersion to produce the aqueous dispersion of the resin microparticle, wherein the cooling step comprises cooling the dispersion to a temperature equal to or lower than a glass transition temperature of the resin having an acidic group at a cooling rate of 0.5 to 10.0°C/min. (inclusive) while applying a shearing force to the dispersion.
