abstract The present invention is a method of forming a polyalkylene ether (also referred to as poly(alkylene glycol)) aldehyde compound by combining in a solvent a polyalkylene glycol alcohol with a phenyl sulfonate activated ketal protected compound, adding a base to the combination, deprotecting the ketal protected polyalkylene compound to form a polyalkylene terminated with a vicinal diol, and oxidizing the polyalkylene terminated with a vicinal diol to form the polyalkylene aldehyde compound.
