abstract An improved synthesis for the preparation of [R-(R*, R*)]-2-(4-fluorophenyl)- β, δ-dihydroxy-5-(1- methylethyl)-3-phenyl-4-[(phenylamino)carbonyl]-1 H-pyrrole-1-heptanoic acid or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, as well as other valuable intermediates used in the process, are described. The compounds prepared by a process of the invention are useful in treating hyperlipidemia, hypercholesterolemia, osteoporosis, benign prostatic hyperplasia, or Alzheimer's disease.
