abstract Disclosed is a composition for photo-alignment films, which contains an azo compound and a polymer compatible with the azo compound. Also disclosed are a photo-alignment film having a haze value of not more than 1 and obtained by irradiating a layer of the above-described composition formed on a substrate with light, thereby providing the layer with liquid crystal aligning ability; and an optical isomer wherein a layer (A), which is obtained by providing a layer composed of the composition with liquid crystal aligning ability by irradiating the layer with light, and a polymer layer (B), which is obtained by polymerizing a liquid crystal compound having a polymerizable group in a state aligned by the layer (A), are bound together by a covalent bond. The composition for photo-alignment films enables to improve adhesion to a base, particularly to a plastic base in the photo-alignment film and the optical isomer.
