Disclosed is a novel compound useful as a component of an organic EL element. By using the compound, it becomes possible to provide a practically useful organic EL element which shows a low driving voltage and little leakage current. Specifically disclosed is a fluoranthene compound represented by the general formula (1). A-L-B (1) wherein A and B independently represent a univalent group having a fluoranthene structure represented by the general formula (2), provided that A is a carbon selected from the carbons located at positions 7 to 10 in the general formula (1) and can bind to L in the general formula (1), and B is a carbon selected from the carbons located at positions 1 to 6 and can bind to L in the general formula (1); and L represents a group selected from a single bond, a substituted or unsubstituted arylene group having 6 to 40 carbon atoms, a bivalent group derived from a substituted or unsubstituted arylamine having 6 to 40 carbon atoms, a bivalent group derived from a substituted or unsubstituted heterocyclic ring having 3 to 40 carbon atoms, and a substituted or unsubstituted ethenylene group. |
