abstract A carbon nanotube assembly having multiple carbon nanotubes formed on a substrate, characterized in that (1) amorphous carbon is superimposed on the surface of each of the carbon nanotubes with a coating ratio of 55 to 100%; (2) the amorphous carbon has an average thickness of 0.3 to 5 nm; (3) the carbon nanotube assembly has an order parameter of 0.85 to 1.0; (4) the carbon nanotube assembly has a bulk density of 1 to 1000 mg/cm3; (5) the carbon nanotube assembly has an oxygen/carbon atomic number ratio of 0.002 to 0.350; and (6) in the Raman spectrum of carbon nanotube assembly, the area ratio of G-band appearing in the vicinity of 1590 cm-1 to D-band appearing in the vicinity of 1350 cm-1 (G/D ratio) is in the range of 0.45 to 0.75.
