Novel 1,3-bis(3-formyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)adamantanes useful as intermediates for the synthesis of adamantanebisphenol derivatives or as raw materials of photoresist materials, synthetic resins such as epoxy resin, thermal recording materials and so on which are excellent in heat resistance, mechanical strength and so on can be industrially easily obtained in high yield and at high purity by reacting a 1,3-bis(4-hydroxy- phenyl)adamantane with hexamethylenetetramine or the like in the presence of an acid to form a Schiff base and hydrolyzing the Schiff base with an acid. Further, novel polynuclear polyphenols are also provided, which can be derived from the 1,3-bis(3-formyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)adamantanes. |
