abstract The invention relates to methods of treating shock in a subject by administering a pharmaceutically effective amount of androstenetriol (AET), androstenediol (AED) or derivatives thereof to a subject suffering from or exhibiting the symptoms of shock. In one particular embodiment, the subject is suffering from hemorrhagic shock. The invention also relates to methods of preventing shock in a subject at risk suffering from shock by administering a pharmaceutically effective amount of androstenetriol or a derivative thereof to the subject, prior to or immediately at the onset of the first symptoms of shock. In one particular embodiment, the subject is at risk suffering from hemorrhagic shock.
