abstract High intensity light emission is attained by synthesizing an α-sialon of good crystallinity, and a white LED excellent in color rendering properties is provided by shifting (blue shifting) light emission to short wavelengths. In design of an α-sialon represented by the following general formula: (Lix, Cay, Euz)(Si12-(m+n)Alm+n)(OnN16n), the α-sialon is conditioned so that it satisfies 0<x<2.0, 0<y<2.0, 0<z≤0.5 (where, 0.3≤x+y+z≤2.0), 0<m≤4.0 and 0<n≤3.0.
