Disclosed is an active material for lithium ion batteries which enables to obtain a lithium ion battery having excellent high-rate charge and discharge characteristics. Also disclosed is a lithium ion battery having excellent high-rate charge and discharge characteristics. Specifically disclosed is an active material for lithium ion batteries which is obtained by substituting a part of elements in lithium titanate with Al and represented by the following composition formula: Li[Li(1-x)/3AlxTi(5-2x)/3]O4 (0 < x < 1). Also specifically disclosed is a lithium ion battery wherein such an active material is used as the negative electrode active material. |
