The present application relates to an agent for colouring keratin fibres based on oxidation dye precursors and/or direct dyes, which is characterized in that it comprises, in a suitable cosmetic carrier, at least one cellulose ether with 4,000 to 10,000 anhydroglucose units, which is substituted by (a) per mole of anhydroglucose unit on average 0.0003 to 0.08 mol of a nonionic or cationic hydrophobic substituent containing an alkyl group or arylalkyl group having 8 to 24 carbon atoms and (b) a cationic substituent of the formula (I), [R1R2R3R4N+] (Az-)1/z (I) where R1, R2 and R3, independently of one another, are a methyl or ethyl group, R4 is a -CH2-CH2 group or a -CH2-CHOH-CH2 group, Az- is an anion and z is 1, 2 or 3. |
