abstract | The present invention relates to methods for improving the viability and recovery of islets that are separated from a donor organ for subsequent transplantation. In a preferred embodiment, the islets are separated from a donor pancreas and transplanted into the liver of a diabetic patient. One or more emulsified perfluorocarbons (ePFCs) may be infused into the donor pancreas prior to islet isolation and transplantation. The ePFCs may enhance the oxygenation of islets, thereby enhancing their viability and health so they may withstand a vigorous isolation procedure such as the Edmonton Protocol. The present invention not only preserves the donor organ using ePFC, but also rescues islets and donor organs that would otherwise be damaged or destroyed during isolation and transplantation procedures. The separated islets may be injected into the portal vein of a liver where they will assist in producing insulin and regulating blood glucose levels. |
