abstract Treatment of Very Low Birthweight (VLBW) Infants by Increasing Blood Insulin Levels This invention relates to the treatment of very low birthweight (VLBW) infants by increasing blood insulin levels in said infant during the first few days of life, for example using insulin or insulinotropic agents, and maintaining said increased levels for an extended period. This treatment leads to improved weight gain and overall improvement in outcome for this high-risk population, including a reduced risk of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). Methods of treatment and uses of insulin and insulinotropic agents in such methods are provided.
