abstract Disclosed is an aqueous metal surface treating agent which contains an organosilicon compound having, in one molecule, two or more functional groups (a) represented by the following formula: -SiR1R2R3 (wherein R1, R2 and R3 respectively represent an alkyl group, an alkoxy group or a hydroxyl group, provided that at least one of them represents an alkoxy group) and one ore more hydrophilic functional groups (b) selected from a hydroxyl group (other than the one in the functional group (a)), amino group, carboxyl group, phosphoric acid group, phosphonic acid group, sulfonic group, polyoxyethylene chain and amide group, wherein the molecular weight per one functional group (b) is 100-10,000. Also disclosed are a surface treating method and a surface-treated metal material. Such an aqueous metal surface treating agent enables to form a coating film having not only excellent corrosion resistance and adhesiveness but also heat resistance, weldability, continuous workability and conductivity of inorganic coatings and fingerprint resistance and coating workability of organic coatings.
