abstract Pharmaceutical and cosmetic formulations and methods comprising at least one of pre-B cell colony-enhancing factor (PBEF) and phosphoribosyl pyrophosphate (PRPP), and optionally, nicotinamide, are provided for therapeutic, cyto-protective, cosmetic and anti-aging purposes. Said formulations comprising PBEF, PRPP and nicotinamide, individually or in combination, increase the metabolic fitness, health and performance of the cell by optimization of the intracellular concentration of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) via the NAD+ salvage pathway, resulting in increased cell health and resistance to stress and trauma, thereby delaying apoptosis
