The invention relates to isolated polynucleotides encoding polypeptides involved in anthocyanin biosynthesis. In particular, the invention involves methods of genetically engineering plants to produce altered, agronomic, physiological, or developmental changes in plants by expressing a transgene including DNA encoding one or more anthocyanin biosynthetic gene within plant cells. In particular, it has been found that it is possible to engineer potato plants that express a recombinant anthocyanin biosynthetic gene that have an altered phenotype, including increased anthocyanin production. Manipulation of the expression of an anthocyanin gene (e.g. by overexpressing or gene silencing methodologies) facilitates the production of plants having altered coloration. |
