abstract The invention relates to an angular grating Bragg refractometer using optical power diffracted to a continuum of radiative modes. Said refractometer comprises at least one light wave guide (2) comprising at least one angular Bragg grating (4) formed by a part of the wave guide which is brought into contact with a medium (7) whose refractive index is to be determined, a light source (10) coupled with the wave guide for transmitting said light thereto in such a way that it interacts with the medium, means (17) for measuring optical power of the light diffracted to the radiative mode continuum during the interaction of the light emitted by the source with the grating and electronically processing means (22) for providing the medium refractive index value from said optical power.
