abstract A fused-ring-containing compound comprising: a fused bicyclic group of a specific structure; and a carbazolyl group or analogue thereof and/or an indolyl group or analogue thereof. Also provided is an organic electroluminescent element which comprises a cathode, an anode, and an organic thin film sandwiched therebetween which comprises one or more layers at least including a luminescent layer, wherein at least one layer of the organic thin film consists of the fused-ring-containing compound alone or contains the compound as a component of a mixture. This organic electroluminescent element has a high luminescent efficiency and high heat resistance and has an extremely long life.
