Methods for determining whether a test agent binds to an α2δ-1 polypeptide, for screening for a test agent that binds to an α2δ-1 polypeptide, for determining α2δ-1 or α2δ-2 selectivity of an agent, for quantifying binding sites of a specific α2δ-1 selective (ASL-1) ligand in a biological sample, for quantifying ASL1 binding sites in a biological sample, for determining the tissue distribution of α2δ-1, for determining the subtype occupancy of an agent, and for determining the subtype occupancy of an α2δ-1 ligand, are provided. The invention also includes articles of manufacture comprising vessels containing a specific α2δ-1 selective ligand.
