abstract An organic EL element which comprises an electroluminescent layer consisting of a single layer or having a multilayer structure composed of two or more layers, the electroluminescent layer containing a pyridine derivative represented by the formula (1): [wherein Ar1 represents aryl; m is an integer of 1-5; Φ represents a group represented by the formula (1a): (wherein Ar2 represents aryl and p is an integer of 1-5) or the formula (1b): (wherein Ar3 represents aryl and q is an integer of 1-5); and n is an integer of 0-2]. The organic EL element is excellent in luminescent efficiency, luminance, and durability. In particular, it emits a blue light improved in luminescent efficiency and luminance to a level equal to those for other colors and has excellent durability.
