abstract A polymer film or fiber which can be rapidly and repeatedly stretched, shrunk, or deformed in a gas such as air (in a dry system). A degree of deformation at least ten times those in conventional techniques is realized. The method is a method of deforming a polymer film or fiber by means of the adsorption/desorption of molecules caused by an external stimulation, and comprises applying the external stimulation to the polymer film or fiber which is in a deformed state so as to have an internal force and thereby changing the coefficient of elasticity of the polymer film or fiber in the deformed state to deform the polymer film or fiber.
