| abstract | The invention relates to the use of trans-resveratrol as a therapeutic agent for the treatment of male infertility and/or subfertility in mammals. Trans-resveratrol induces an increase in sperm concentration owing to overall spermatogenic tissue growth. Trans-resveratrol also induces an increase in the seric concentration of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone and testosterone, which involves hypophyseal stimulation in the hypothalamic-hypophyseal-testicular axis. Unlike other medicaments available for male infertility treatment, trans-resveratrol is used for the treatment of male infertility and/or subfertility having different causes, such as idiopathic infertility, high levels of reactive oxygen species or inflammatory alterations. Given that male infertility and/or subfertility generally have multiple converging causes, trans-resveratrol is advantageous in that it has various different action mechanisms. |
