abstract The invention relates to a method for producing a water-absorbing polysaccharide, comprising the following steps: contacting an uncrosslinked polysaccharide with a polyphosphate or polyphosphoric acid as the cross-linking agent in the presence of water while forming a polysaccharide gel; cross-linking the polysaccharide gel. The invention also relates to the water-absorbing polysaccharide obtained by said method, to a water-absorbing polysaccharide, to a composite, to a method for producing said composite, to a composite produced by said method, to the use of the water-absorbing polysaccharides or the composites and to the use of polyphosphates.
