abstract A highly effective photocatalyst active in daylight and based on carbon-modified titanium dioxide (vlp-TiO2) is disclosed, as well as a process for producing the same. The vlp-TiO2 is produced by mixing a finely divided titanium compound (BET >/= 50 m2/g) with a carbon-containing substance, then by thermally treating it at temperatures of up to 400 DEG C. The carbon content ranges from 0.05 to 4 % by weight, preferably from 0.4 to 0.8 % by weight. The product is characterised by an only insignificant ESR signal in a g value range from 1.97 to 2.05, at about 2003. The claimed photocatalyst is suitable for the mineralisation (oxidation) of impurities and pollutants in liquids and gasses.
