Compositions and methods for the treatment of cancer by systemic depletion of arginine, a semi-essential amino acid, whereby the depletion is effected by, and only by, restriction of all sources of arginine, as well as by concurrent control over circulating ornithine and citrulline. Acute treatment sessions include maximal reduction of nutritional intake of arginine, inhibition of net arginine inflow from protein turnover, and elimination of arginine production by intestinal bacteria by sterilization of the gut with suitable antibiotics. Disturbances of blood clotting mechanisms and of hemodynamics are minimized by the administration of a nitric oxide donor and a vasoconstricting peptide. |
