Robust carbon monolith having hierarchical porosity |
abstract |
A carbon monolith includes a robust carbon monolith characterized by a skeleton size of at least 100 nm, and a hierarchical pore structure having both macropores and mesopores. The mesopores provide high surface area. The macropores enable fast mass transportation. The combination of both macropores and mesopores provide the advantages of high surface area and superior mass transportation. Applied to carbon monolithic liquid chromatography columns, carbon monolithic columns according to the invention provide a combination of the chemical merits of a high specific surface area carbon adsorbent and a superior hydrodynamic properties of a monolithic structure. |
