abstract The invention relates to aqueous polymer dispersions containing alkenyl succinic acid anhydrides. Said polymer dispersions can be obtained by miniemulsion polymerisation of hydrophobic monoethylenically unsaturated monomers in the presence of alkenyl succinic acid anhydrides. The invention also relates to methods for producing such polymer dispersions by polymerising hydrophobic monomers according to a miniemulsion polymerisation in the presence of at least one alkenyl succinic acid anhydride, and optionally one alkyl diketene. The invention further relates to the use of the aqueous polymer dispersions containing alkenyl succinic acid anhydrides obtained in this way, as pulp and surface sizing agents for paper, and for hydrophobing leather, natural and/or synthetic fibres, and textiles.
