The present invention discloses a new adjuvant component that possesses the capacity to elicit a strong and long-persisting immune response, when administered in combination with an antigenic substance even though this antigenic substance may have only poor immunogenicity per se, and which can be freeze-dried and subsequently dissolved without heating. The adjuvant of the invention comprises a quaternary amine with a halogen counter ion of the formula NR1R2R3R4-hal, wherein R1 and R2 independently each is a short chain alkyl group containing to 1 to 3 carbon atoms, preferably methyl groups, R3 and R4 independently each is an alken containing from 12 to 20 carbon atoms, preferable from 14 to 18 carbon atoms, and hal is a halogen atom. |
