Disclosed is a ceramic material with high abrasion resistance and low friction which is suitable for cutting tools, sliding members, materials for molds or the like. A ceramic composite material is composed of a phase mainly containing carbon and a ceramic phase (excluding carbon) each having an average crystal grain size of not more than 3 μm, preferably not more than 30 nm. The ceramic phase is composed of at least one selected from the group consisting of nitrides, carbides, oxides, composite nitrides, composite carbides, composite oxides, carbonitrides, oxynitrides, carboxynitrides and carboxides of Al, Si, Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo and W. This composite material is obtained by sintering a raw material powder at a sintering temperature of 800-1,500˚C and a sintering pressure of not less than 200 MPa. |
