A process for industrially advantageously producing a unimodal polymer having a high molecular weight and a narrow molecular-weight distribution, especially a block copolymer of an anionically polymerizable monomer and an acrylic monomer. The process comprises reacting an acrylic monomer with a polymeric anion modified at an end with a compound which, upon reaction with an anion, generates an anion terminal capable of polymerizing an anionically polymerizable monomer and which by itself does not polymerize, in the presence of a compound represented by the formula (1): (R1)nM (wherein R1 represents C1-20 alkyl or C6-20 aryl, provided that when n is 2 or larger, then R1's may be the same or different; M represents an atom belonging to Group 2, 12, or 13 of the Periodic Table in the longer form; and n indicates the valance of M). |
