A novel membrane electrode complex capable of reducing a reaction resistance at 20° and attaining a high output, and a solid polymer type fuel cell using it. A novel membrane electrode complex comprising at least an electrode catalyst layer, an anode and a cathode each consisting of an electrode base material, and a polymer solid electrolyte membrane held between the anode and the cathode, wherein the following expression is satisfied when a reaction resistance at 20° is Rr (Ω cm2). -2 ≤ logRr < 1 When applied to a solid polymer type fuel cell, the membrane electrode complex can attain a high output. Accordingly, the complex can downsize a solid polymer type fuel cell, and become available as power supplies for mobile electrical appliances such as portable phones and notebook type personal computers, various electrical appliances and so forth, thus finding excellent practical uses. The solid polymer type fuel cell can use, as a fuel, hydrogen or an organic solvent such as methanol and dimethyl ether, and is suitably used as the power supply sources of various mobile appliances, thus being industrially useful. |
