abstract A melanogenesis inhibitory substance based on tyrosinase inhibitory activity that is effective in the prevention and treatment of pigmented spots and age spots attributed to pigmentation after sunburn and, natural or occurring shortly after birth, disorders attributed to abnormality of skin pigmentary cells, capillary vessels and other skin constituent elements. This melanogenesis inhibitory substance is a compound consisting of an α or β-D-aldose derivative and an α or β-D-ketose derivative, or an α or β-L-aldose derivative and an α or β-L-ketose derivative having such structures that a deoxysugar such as rhamnose or fucose, an aldohexose such as galactose, mannose, glucose or gulose, a ketohexose such as fructose, psicose or sorbose, an amino sugar such as glucosamine and an aldopentose such as arabinose are linked through glycoside bond with 4-isocyanophenyl group and 4-(2-isocyanoethyl)phenyl group.
