abstract | A water-based vulcanizable adhesive composition which comprises: a phenolic resin emulsion prepared from a methyl ethyl ketone solution of a water-insoluble phenolic resin and an aqueous solution of a water-soluble polymeric material; and a hardener for phenolic resins. This water-based vulcanizable adhesive composition contains methyl ethyl ketone, which is partially miscible with water, in place of an organic solvent completely miscible with water, and the methyl ethyl ketone is used in a significantly reduced amount. The water-soluble polymeric material may be PVA, preferably PVA modified with acetoacetyl groups. This water-based vulcanizable adhesive composition is suitable for use in the bonding with vulcanization of a metal to a (hydrogenated) NBR or acrylic rubber. |
