abstract A method for producing an alcohol wherein an aldehyde is hydrogenated by the use of a hydrogenation catalyst and the resultant reaction product is subjected to distillation for purification, characterized in that the hydrogenation reaction product is subjected to distillation for purification in the absence of the hydrogenation catalyst or in the presence of the hydrogenation catalyst only in such an amount that does not cause a dehydrogenation reaction. The method allows the reduction of the concentration of an aldehyde in the product alcohol and the production of an alcohol having a high purity, with good efficiency at a low cost.
