abstract The invention relates to membrane electrode units comprising two electrochemically active electrodes which are separated by means of a polymer electrolyte membrane. A polyimide layer is provided on the two surfaces of the polymer electrolyte membrane, which are in contact with the electrodes. The inventive membrane electrode units can be used especially for producing fuel cells with particularly high long-term stability.
